Il genio creativo di Mary Lou Williams nell'era dello swing costituisce la punta di diamante della creatività jazzistica femminile, la cui storia è tutta da riscrivere. La presunta mancanza di forza fisica, abilità strumentale, senso dello swing fu alla base sello scetticismo della comunità jazzistica nei confronti delle donne, relegate al ruolo di vocalist in brani commerciali per attrarre fasce più ampie di pubblico.

Significativo è in tal senso un editoriale di Downbeat degli anni Trenta, secondo cui "il vero jazz è una musica vigorosa fatta dagli uomini" e che mentre "le donne amano il violino, gli uomini praticano batteria e trombe."

Lo status di jazzista era riconosciuto solo alle cantanti delle orchestre di Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Chick Webb, Artie Shaw, Gene Krupa che imposero all'attenzione generale il talento di Ivie Anderson, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Helen Humes, Anita O'Day.

Dalla storia segreta dello swing riaffiorano le otto violiniste e la bassista Lucille Dixon ingaggiate nell'orchestra di Earl Hines, la trombettista Billie Rogers,la vibrafonista Marjorie Hyams a fianco di Woody Herman e soprattutto le International Sweethearts of Rhythm.

Un acclamato concerto all'Howard Theather di Washington nel 1940 fu il primo passo di una ribalta nazionale accresciuta dagli ingaggi all'Apollo Theatre di New York e Savoy Ballroom, fino alla tournée europea che la celebrò quale una delle più swinganti big band degli Stati Uniti.

A quest'ottusa segregazione sessista sfuggono anche le orchestre di Ina Ray Hutton, Rita Rio e le diciotto musiciste afroamericane delle International Sweethearts of Rhythm dirette sin dal 1939 dalla trombettista e ballerina Anna Mae Wilburn. Insieme al successo commerciale di "Don't Get It Twisted," tre incisioni consegnano alla storia del jazz questa orchestra di successo, zeppa di soliste ragguardevoli quali la trombettista bianca Ernestine 'Tiny' Davis, la baritonista Helen Saine, la batterista Pauline Braddy, la tenorista Viola Vi Burnsid, la contraltista Roz Cron, la contrabbassista Carline Ray.

Avis rara, quest'orchestra riuscì a imporsi in un mondo musicale razzista e maschilista, a dispetto del suo carattere multietnico ben testimoniato dal documentario The International Sweethearts of Rhythm: America's Hottest Allgirl Band. Incluse nel triplo box set Big Band Jazz-The Jubilee Sessions, le registrazioni radiofoniche di "Blue Lou," "Tuxedo Junction" e "Swing Shift" evocano tutta la frenesia delle sale da ballo dove musica e danza, intrecciandosi e influenzandosi a vicenda, hanno cambiato la storia della musica americana. Gli uomini rimasero però i dominatori dello swing, all'interno di una società sessista che ammirava più l'aspetto fisico rispetto all'abilità strumentale delle International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Ina Ray Hutton's Melodears, The Darlings of Harlem.
