Doing The Jazz Scroll, Building Jazz's Future, Introducing Article Series & More

There's always plenty happening behind the scenes at All About Jazz, and we're beginning to see the results of several recent improvements. We also have some exciting new features on the way. Here's a quick look at what we've been up to this past week...

Good News on the Traffic Front

Our new Radio & Podcast newsletter, delivered every Tuesday, is already making a difference. We're seeing more visitors on Tuesdays, particularly to our radio and podcast pages. It's encouraging to see this new effort paying off so quickly.

Last month, we also completed a project that helps search engines like Google better understand and discover our articles. We're already seeing increased traffic, with many stories attracting impressive readership numbers. We've now made the same improvements to Jazz Near You and should see similar results there.

The Jazz Scroll Is Becoming an App

We're turning The Jazz Scroll into a standalone app, with the goal of eventually making it our flagship All About Jazz app.

If you haven't explored The Jazz Scroll yet, give it a try. Its continuous scrolling format makes it easy to browse articles, reviews, news, videos, and other jazz content without jumping from page to page. It's particularly well suited to mobile devices, and we think it has tremendous potential.

Stay tuned!

Introducing Article Series

We're also developing a new way to organize and showcase the work of our contributors.

Our upcoming Article Series feature will bring related stories together under a common title, making it easier to follow a favorite column, explore a particular subject, or discover articles you might have missed.

For example, Billie Eidson's Miles Ahead: A Jazz Road Trip will become an official series within our upcoming Jazz Traveler category.

We have quite a few existing columns and recurring features that will benefit from this change. It's another way to give our contributors' work greater visibility while making our growing archive easier to explore.

A Little Housekeeping Ahead

As we mentioned last week, we're preparing for a major software upgrade to help keep All About Jazz and Jazz Near You secure, reliable, and ready for future development.

We're working to complete several projects before the upgrade begins. Once underway, we'll temporarily pause development of new website features while our technical team makes the necessary changes and tests everything carefully. We expect the process to take approximately a month, although that could change as work progresses.

Our regular publishing activities will continue as usual. You'll still find the articles, reviews, music, newsletters, and other content you've come to expect.

There's always something happening at All About Jazz. Some improvements are immediately visible, while others take place quietly behind the scenes. All of them are part of our ongoing effort to make AAJ and Jazz Near You better places to discover, enjoy, and share jazz.

Enrico Rava: The Secret Corners of a Master

Meeting Enrico Rava means stepping into a world of stories, musicians and memories spanning decades of jazz history. We met on the occasion of the release of Corners, the ECM album he recorded with his band, Fearless Five, and a very special guest, Joe Lovano. With so many anecdotes, encounters and digressions to draw on, the challenge was not finding topics to discuss, but deciding where to begin and what to leave out. We settled onto a sofa. I pulled vinyl records, CDs and old trumpets out of my bags. From there, the conversation took on a life of its own. Continue reading...

All About Jazz: Building the Future of Jazz, Together

When I founded All About Jazz in 1995, I envisioned a place where people who loved jazz could share their knowledge, discover new music, and connect with others who shared their passion. Thirty-one years later, that vision has grown into an internationally respected institution serving musicians, writers, photographers, venues, record labels, presenters, educators, broadcasters, and listeners around the world. Today, All About Jazz encompasses an independent publication, Jazz Near You, an extensive musician database, a historical archive, a growing network of jazz radio shows and podcasts, music discovery services, and an expanding collection of community-powered tools. Continue reading...

Francesco Diodati: Making Room for the Unknown

A central figure in Enrico Rava's groups for the past decade, Francesco Diodati is one of the most creative European guitarists of his generation. An eclectic artist, always open to new explorations, he has led two pivotal ensembles in contemporary Italian jazz, Neko and Yellow Squeeds. He has also been involved in countless projects, including those led by Bobby Previte, Matteo Bortone, Julien Pontvianne, Paolo Fresu, Marcello Allulli, Francesco Ponticelli. In this interview, Diodati discusses his eclectic collaborations, and in particular his musical partnership with Enrico Rava, and the cooperative group Weave4. Continue reading...

Jazz Near You: Building a Better Way to Discover Live Jazz

Finding live jazz should be easy. Whether you're looking for a show in your hometown, planning a night out in New York City, or traveling abroad and hoping to discover the local jazz scene, you should be able to find out who's playing, where, and when without visiting a dozen websites. That's the idea behind Jazz Near You. Launched in 2011 as an extension of All About Jazz, Jazz Near You has grown into a global event discovery platform serving more than 300 cities worldwide. Its mission is straightforward: connect jazz fans with live music while helping musicians, venues, festivals, presenters, and promoters reach the widest possible audience. But there's considerably more happening behind the scenes than a collection of local concert calendars might suggest. Continue reading...
