All About Jazz: What's New for September 24, 2026

Fresh off compiling a multinational tribute celebrating Miles Davis's centennial, Ian Patterson is back with John Coltrane At 100: A Global Perspective. Drawing on voices from 100 countries, it's another fascinating look at a legendary figure whose influence extends far beyond jazz's traditional centers. We also took the opportunity to complete John Coltrane's Musician Orbit, where you can explore the artists who influenced him, the musicians he influenced, and those whose music shares a connection with his own.

Over the years, I've discovered that even people who know All About Jazz well don't always understand how it works—or what exactly I do behind the scenes. That's understandable. There's a lot more happening here than what you see on the surface. So I decided the time was right to pull back the curtain and explain how AAJ works, how all the pieces fit together, and what I do as its architect and builder. Look for the Jetsons-like image below entitled, "By Jazz Fans, For Jazz Fans: How All About Jazz Works."

Radio & Podcast News

Back in 2017, we introduced our radio section, which eventually evolved into today's Radio & Podcast section. We've steadily improved it over the years while greatly expanding the number of quality shows we present. There's a little something for everyone, and our affiliated hosts do a fantastic job with their respective programs.

If you're a regular listener, we have some good news. Yesterday, we added a feature that lets you select your favorite show and have its most recent program or episode appear directly on your member page. Just choose your favorite show from your Member Settings, and we'll automatically present its latest episode on your member page.

And we're not done yet. Soon, we'll spin off the Radio & Podcast portion of the AAJ newsletter into a dedicated newsletter of its own, along with a significant facelift to the section itself. We're also experimenting with something we're particularly excited about: anchoring your favorite show to the navigation bar so you can keep listening as you move from page to page on All About Jazz. The trick is keeping the show playing continuously while you browse. We'll soon find out what's possible, but we're hopeful.

With the advent of his birth centenary, John William Coltrane is on our minds again. But then he nearly always is. His influence on generations of saxophonists is palpable. For countless musicians, the term "Coltranesque" can be a badge of honor or a millstone around the neck. Julius Hemphill, a brilliant alto saxophonist and extraordinary composer, was a towering figure in avant-garde jazz and creative music. Yet his body of work remains surprisingly little known, even among aficionados of this sort of adventurous music. Hemphill's music demonstrated a deep feeling for the blues and other African American traditions. When All About Jazz launched in 1995, one of our earliest taglines was simple: "By jazz fans, for jazz fans." At the time, those six words pretty much said it all. We were people who loved jazz, writing about jazz for other people who loved jazz. There wasn't much need to explain the organizational philosophy behind it because there wasn't much of an organization yet.
