Two of the creative scene's most heralded artists are back with exciting new music: pianist Myra Melford's Fire & Water Quintet have released their third album Sure Grand Out with Mary Halvorson, Ingrid Laubrock, Tomeka Reid & Lesley Mok and the master, Henry Threadgill's parallel release to Cut Your Where You Was—Fifteen—which celebrates the fifteenth year of existence of the trio with Threadgill, Vijay Iyer & Dafnis Prieto. Swiss drummer Jonathan Delazer's Gottliche Skizzen, Argentinean guitarist Gon Muruaga and the guitar-heavy Slate Trio from England make their debuts on One Man's Jazz, while bassist Emma Dayhuff is back with her second release, again featuring saxophonist Isaiah Collier. Airlift, a large ensemble from Philadelphia and led by drummer Kevin Diehl, shows there's a strong free jazz scene in that city, while one of Philly's stars, the 102 year-old Marshall Allen is featured in a group formed at the Big Ears Festival by bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma. And wrapping things up, there's a preview track of the upcoming release by the one and only James Brandon Lewis' Red Lily.
