Mario Mattia’s "Metamorphosis"—Improvisation Without A Map

The American pianist’s latest freeform improvisation reveals the more exploratory side of a musical language rooted in spontaneity and deep listening.

American improvisational pianist Mario Mattia has released Metamorphosis, a seven-minute freeform piano improvisation that begins in lyrical, recognisably tonal territory before gradually moving into increasingly angular and non-tonal terrain.

It is an adventurous piece, but the impulse behind it is familiar to anyone who understands improvisation as a process of discovery. Mattia does not sit down at the piano with a completed composition in mind. Instead, he begins playing and responds to what he hears, allowing the music to develop in real time.

That approach places improvisation, listening and musical instinct at the centre of his work.

A graduate of New England Conservatory, Mattia's musical vocabulary has been shaped by a wide range of influences, including classical music, jazz, progressive rock, modernist and non-tonal traditions, as well as ambient music. Within that landscape, jazz's emphasis on listening, responsiveness and spontaneous creation is an important part of his musical thinking, even as his improvisations increasingly move beyond conventional jazz language.

Metamorphosis is perhaps his clearest recent example of that exploratory side.

The piece begins with a sense of harmonic familiarity. Its opening is lyrical and searching, but as the improvisation progresses, the gravitational pull of conventional harmony begins to weaken. Phrases become more fragmented, the harmonic language becomes increasingly unstable and eventually the music crosses into non-tonal territory.

Crucially, it never returns to where it began.

“Metamorphosis was a one-way journey from tonal lyricism into increasingly non-tonal territory, with no return to where it began," Mattia says. “That irreversible transformation is the heart of the improvisation."

The absence of any pre-determined destination is central to Mattia's practice. Rather than treating improvisation simply as a way of embellishing or extending a pre-existing composition, he approaches it as the composition itself: an act of listening and decision making in which the next musical event cannot be completely known beforehand.

That philosophy can be heard across a catalogue that encompasses very different forms of improvisational expression.

Recent work such as Andrea and Prayer explores the quieter, more meditative possibilities of the piano. Prayer, in particular, grew from themes of loss, distance and hope while Andrea offers a concise study in atmosphere and melodic restraint. Both of these pieces have helped introduce Mattia's music to a growing audience.

But alongside them are works that push much further into abstraction.

Odyssey, an 11-minute solo piano improvisation, originated in a single uninterrupted performance and moves through several distinct musical worlds, from tonal lyricism into a complex and increasingly non-tonal central section before arriving at a transformed meditative conclusion.

The work is now being transcribed from Mattia's original recording by his long-time transcriptionist, Howard Begun. The first seven pages have been completed, with a fully engraved master score to follow.

That process creates an intriguing bridge between improvisation and composition. The music was never planned as a written piece, yet it is now being captured in notation and considered as something another pianist might potentially study and perform.

For Mattia, the recording remains essential. Much of Odyssey is freely timed, making elements such as pacing, resonance, pedalling and expressive timing difficult to communicate fully through conventional notation.

It also illustrates something fundamental about his approach: improvisation does not necessarily mean a lack of structure. Structure can emerge through the act of playing itself.

This is where Mattia's work becomes particularly interesting in the wider context of contemporary improvisation. His music draws on the jazz tradition of spontaneous musical decision making while also allowing himself to move freely into classical, modernist, ambient and experimental territory.

Metamorphosis captures that philosophy particularly well. It begins somewhere familiar, then gradually gives up the security of that starting point. The listener is invited to follow the process rather than wait for any conventional resolution.
