And so, after a couple years away, the return to Heidelberg and Enjoy Jazz was a particularly fruitful trip that yielded consistently excellent performances. From familiar names like Charles Lloyd, Nils Petter Molvær, Dave Holland and Thomas Siffling in different surroundings, previously unexperienced live concerts from Amores Pasados and Julia Hülsmann, and the welcome surprise of an unfamiliar artist like John Kameel Farah, Enjoy Jazz once again managed—in this case in the space of a little more than a week—to deliver on the foundational premise that makes it so terrific: stellar performances, delivered just one per night so that there was plenty of time to reflect upon them rather than simply rushing off to the next show, in venues perfectly suited to them.

It was so great to be back.
