Tony Palmer è uno dei registi che più hanno legato la loro storia a quella della musica rock ma non solo.
Buon amico di John Lennon decise di realizzare verso la metà degli anni settanta una serie di documentari sulla musica popolare che ancora oggi è considerata inarrivabile per completezza e sapienza narrativa. I diciasette episodi che componevano la serie furono mandati in onda da molte televisioni in giro per il mondo e sono tutti contenuti in questo eccellente box di 5 DVD appena pubblicato dalla Voiceprint che li propone per la prima volta in questo formato.
Dopo una prima parte prettamente storica dedicata ad analizzare la musica popolare dal Ragtime al Blues, dal Jazz al Vaudeville, dal Musical al Folk, dallo Swing al Country, dal Rock al Pop, si lascia spazio alle interviste realizzate con i maggiori esponenti della musica degli ultimi 70 anni.
