Luke Stewart, Silvia Bolognesi & Alexander Hawkins

I confess to having a thing about basses, particularly of the acoustic kind, so I got all excited when the latest Luke Stewart album rolled in. About to do a gig with his Remembrance Quintet, he change course and combined musicians from his Silt Trio and the Quintet for a live gig which was recorded with the result, the truly ass-kicking The Order. Italian bassist Silvia Bolognesi's album Is That Jazz? was also recorded live, but its origin was different. She had been covering Gil Scott-Heron's important works with her ensemble class in Siena, Italy, and there was so much enthusiasm from the students, they performed Heron's music with singer/poet Eric Mingus joining the party. Other new and worthy albums sampled include English pianist Alexander Hawkins' Song Unconditional , his second solo recording for Intakt, and one he says he's very proud of. You'll hear new releases by Italians Andrea Ciceri & Esatomic and Gabriele Mitelli, American pianist Eli Wallace with a stout Argentinean rhythm section, Australian super group, the Sandy Evans-Andrew Robson Quartet, and three gems from the Strata-East catalog by Charles Tolliver, Cecil McBee & Shamek Farrah.
