Chad LB: Time in a Bottle
Sooner or later, jazz musicians—some, that is, not all—who have earned a measure of success decide they would like to try something different. In many cases, that "something different" involves a string section. Among the most recent wayfarers along the string-laden path is New York-based tenor saxophonist Chad LB (shorthand for Lefkowitz-Brown) whose recording, Time in a Bottle, showcases his impressive horn in front of a rhythm section and ten-member string component.

The result is much the same as that produced by saxophonists from Charlie Parker onward: a series of lovely albeit well-traveled themes on which Chad LB is given free rein to place his uniquely personal imprint. Several are ballads, and even those that are not seldom unfold at a more than leisurely pace. A quintet of standards ("My Way" barely makes the cut) is fleshed out by Jim Croce's "Time in a Bottle," Gordon Summers' "The Shape of My Heart," Astor Piazzolla's "Libertango" and the traditional warhorse "Danny Boy."

There is no doubting Chad LB's virtuosity; his technique is unerring, his improvisations fluent and logical, his phrasing spot on, his sound warm and inviting. The rhythm section(s) acquit themselves well (three bassists and three drummers alternate), as do the strings, who serve as more than wallpaper, providing a strong melodic backdrop for Chad LB's expressive tenor. Pianist Liya Grigoryan solos not often but well, as does guitarist Cecil Alexander (including the closing "Misty"). Those standards not already noted are "Autumn Leaves," "These Foolish Things" and "For All We Know."

For what it is—an album of ballads and other slow-moving themes governed by a tenor saxophonist who is reinforced by string and rhythm sections—Time in a Bottle is very well done. Chad LB is always a pleasure to hear, and plays as well as could be expected on every number. The music is charming, the arrangements suitable for what is going down. In other words, everything falls neatly and carefully into place. It is a nicely wrapped package suitable for almost any occasion, even holidays such as the Fourth of July—just do not expect any fireworks.
