La dimensione, più che del libro vero e proprio, è quella del saggio lungo: qualche decina di pagine (non poco spazio è infatti destinato alla scrittura su pentagramma) traccia dapprima un profilo di Tristano (calato nella sua epoca, a sua volta succintamente ripercorsa) per poi concentrarsi sulla composizione specifica, descritta nei minimi dettagli e nella parte finale del volume trascritta sulla scorta di un lavoro certosino quanto ingegnoso che viene a sua volta capillarmente illustrato. Interlinee e caratteri sono particolarmente larghi, per cui la lettura non può che essere rapida e scorrevole.
Nella decisamente scarna pubblicistica dedicata a una delle figure-chiave dell'evoluzione del linguaggio jazzistico dagli anni della seconda guerra mondiale in avanti, il lavoro di Marco Di Battista, pianista, compositore e didatta (tutti elementi che si colgono con chiarezza lungo il testo), si colloca quindi come un titolo più o meno ineludibile.
