Robin Verheyen can switch effortlessly between jazz, rock and Bach, but concentrates on acoustic improvisation with his New York quartet. The Flemish saxophonist performed recently at the BIMHUIS, accompanied by his band TaxiWars, which features dEUS frontman and cult indie legend Tom Barman. Verheyen lived in Brussels and Paris before moving to New York, where he is making waves for, among other things, his collaborations with some of the greats of improvisation, such as Marc Copland, Gary Peacock and Joey Baron.
This BIMHUIS date is a presentation of When Birds Leave, his new album with pianist Copland, double bassist Drew Gress and drummer Billy Hart.
'Robin Verheyen has built a solid musical relationship with Marc Copland, with Copland as the sorcerer and Verheyen as the sorcerer's apprentice. They are soul mates in improvisation, not only on standards and original material, but also in the subdued lyricism that characterizes the work of both artists' (Canvas). The tireless Hart was performing live with Otis Redding, Sam & Dave and other such soul greats more than half a century ago, and has made albums with the likes of Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock and Pharoah Sanders. He performs regularly at the BIMHUIS, often with younger musicians such as Mark Turner and Ethan Iverson (The Bad Plus).
