Take Five With Carole Troll
ByI am a jazz vocalist, professional actor, writer, activist and small business owner. I've appeared at numerous jazz venues and clubs, have been seen on several episodes of the Law and Order franchise as well as many other commercials, television and film projects. I am always looking to collaborate and perform with great musicians!
Instrument(s):
Vocals.
Teachers and/or influences?
Of the numerous influences, Sarah Vaughan is at the top of the list.
I knew I wanted to be a musician when...
I was old enough to know I was alive!
Your sound and approach to music:
My ultimate sound and goal is that of one who makes love to every note and phrase and takes the audience on that journey with them.
Your teaching approach:
The best philosophy is to never think you know everything there is about music and jazz. You will never stop learning.
Your dream band:
Esperanza Spalding, Herbie Hancock, Billy Cobham, Chris Botti. I would like to work with all of them and would love to sing with Al Jarreau!
Road story: Your best or worst experience:
My best and worst experience was performing on a broken leg when I didn't know it was broken. It was the worst because it was broken, but it was the best because I learned that endurance was one of my strongest gifts.
Favorite venue:
Josie's. A little dive in St. Louis that is no longer there. We used to fill the house every weekend; the patrons loved us and it gave me the opportunity to hone my skills.
Your favorite recording in your discography and why?
Gershwin Live! (Sony, 1990) with Sarah Vaughan, Michael Tilson Thomas and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
The first Jazz album I bought was:
It was one of the many Billie Holiday greatest hits albums but the name escapes me because it was years ago.
What do you think is the most important thing you are contributing musically?
Helping to keep jazz alive!
Did you know...
I recently appeared in a Healthcare.gov ad and was thrilled and honored to help get people covered!
CDs you are listening to now:
Dave Brubeck, Take Five (Columbia, 1959);
Michael Buble, To Be Loved (Reprise, 2013);
Nancy Wilson, Guess Who I Saw Today: Nancy Wilson Sings Songs of Lost Love (Blue Note, 2005).
Desert Island picks:
Al Jarreau, Jareau (Warner, 1990);
Ramsey Lewis, Mother Nature's Son (Cadet, 1968);
Sarah Vaughan, Gershwin Live (Sony);
Phoebe Snow, Second Childhood (Columbia, 1976);
Sarah Vaughn, Ken Burn's Jazz: Sarah Vaughn (Polygram, 2000).
How would you describe the state of jazz today?
Alive but needs a love transfusion from new and dedicated fans!
What are some of the essential requirements to keep jazz alive and growing?
A couple of years of steady bookings in unlikely venues across the country. Recruiting new listeners by introducing it and its hipness in grade schools, high schools and colleges. Incorporated retro style with the sounds of jazz by enlisting the help of fashion designers and social media.
What's your greatest fear when you perform?
Nobody shows up to hear me!
What song would you like played at your funeral?
"Lord Take Me Higher in You."
What is your favorite song to whistle or sing in the shower?
"I Cried for You."
By Day:
I'm an actor auditioning and the owner of Equally Loved Wedding Officiate Services
If I weren't a jazz musician, I would be a:
Acting non stop!
