Ryan Blotnick: Solo, Volume I

Dopo due album a suo nome registrati con formazioni variabili (trio, quartetto, quintetto), il giovane chitarrista Ryan Blotnick (classe 1983) ha sentito il bisogno di ritrovare una dimensione più intimista, dedicandosi intensamente alla pratica del solo, allo stesso tempo ritornando nel nativo Maine dopo alcuni anni trascorsi a New York. Ne scaturisce un lavoro delicato e interessante, intenso pur nella sua brevità (poco meno di 34 minuti), ricco di spunti e stimoli in un approccio strumentale alla chitarra che riesce a fondere jazz, classica e fingerpicking.

Blotnick è più interessato alla costruzione di un'atmosfera che al puro accumulo di note, come è evidente fin dal primo brano, una rilettura rarefatta di "Monk's Mood," unico titolo non composto (o improvvisato) dal chitarrista, e confermato dal secondo, un'esplorazione sonora dove assume particolare rilievo il timbro elettrificato del suo strumento, una chitarra acustica Martin 00-18 del 1959 con cui ha inciso tutti i brani eccetto uno. Blotnick cita diversi chitarristi che hanno influenzato il suo fingerpicking, dai jazzisti classici come Joe Pass e Lenny Breau al più moderno Marc Ribot, senza dimenticare artisti come Neil Young e Leo Kottke, tutti più o meno rintracciabili nelle otto tracce che compongono il CD, ciascuna con la propria individualità.

Nelle intenzioni di Blotnick il disco, disponibile esclusivamente in edizione limitatissima o in download digitale dal sito del chitarrista, dovrebbe essere il primo di una serie dedicata ad esplorare le possibilità della chitarra elettroacustica colmando i divari tra jazz, classica, Americana e improvvisazione pura; visti gli ottimi risultati ottenuti in questo primo sforzo, speriamo che l'attesa per i successivi non sia troppo lunga.
