Joe Morris, Barry Guy/Roberto Ottaviano & Bill Connors

Bassist/guitarist Joe Morris was recently honored at the annual Vision Festival for his lifetime contributions, and if anyone has any doubts about that, just listen to his new album Counter Spectacle out on the FSR label. With reed players Rob Brown & Anna Webber & drummer Matthew Rousseau, Morris lets freedom reign. This is a true keeper! It's one of a number of wonderful new releases from FSR featured in this episode—the sublime yet daring first-time match-up of master bassist Barry Guy & Italian saxophonist Roberto Ottaviano, the trio of saxophonist Frank Gratkowski, trombonist Sebi Tramontana & pianist Steve Beresford, and B.A.N.S., an international quartet recorded live in Austria (bassist Pascal Niggenkemper & saxophonist John Butcher among others). If you want even more challenge, Australian guitarist Oren Ambarchi combines great technique with sonic design, joined by Swedish legend Krister Bothen of Don Cherry fame, and Marty Ehrlich's Open Air which recreates all of saxophonist Julius Hemphill's compositions for the World Saxophone Quartet. There's also a taste of Kris Davis' upcoming second release with her new trio, and a look at the re-release by ECM of guitarist Bill Connors' classic Of Mist And Melting.
