Don Braden appartiene a quella schiera di sassofonisti emersi tra gli anni ottanta e novanta sull'onda di un neo bop caratterizzato da forti legami coi maestri degli anni cinquanta e sessanta (Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter) e relazioni col modello Blue Note.

In un quarto di secolo ha espresso al meglio le sue doti (suono corposo, fraseggio fluente di matrice post-coltraniana) con i migliori esponenti di quest'estetica in numerosi album: Tom Harrell, Ralph Peterson, Freddie Hubbard, Christian McBride, Vincent Herring, Conrad Herwig eccetera.

L'interesse di questo disco è duplice. Da un lato la celebrazione del sodalizio col bassista Joris Teepe, partner di molte incisioni e collaborazioni, ma soprattuto la scelta di esibirsi sia in duo col collega che in trio coi batteristi Gene Jackson (in tre brani) e Matt Wilson (in quattro). Le incisioni in duo ("Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," "This Is New" e "We Take No Prisoners") risalgono al febbraio 2009, le altre all'aprile/maggio 2016.

Con gli anni lo stile di Braden ha acquisito profondità espressiva e questo disco si fa apprezzare per i suoi fervidi interventi: assoli rilassati e ricchi di idee che si snodano con equilibrio, evidenziando le doti del grande narratore. A questo il sax tenore aggiunge il fascino del timbro suadente e l'eleganza melodica. La relazione con i colleghi della ritmica è intensa e contribuisce alla riuscita dell'opera.
