Carmen McRae, Quincy Jones, Black & White Sessions

Click the play button to listen

This week, Duke Ellington works as interpreted by Franz Koglmann / Lee Konitz, Della Reese and then Etta Jones with the Cyril Haynes Quartet. The Jones tune comes from a Mosaic Box Set reissuing works recorded for the short-lived label Black & White Records. We'll hear two more tracks from that box, from Ivie Anderson and Helen Humes. Organist Big Big John Patton and Philly icon Bootsie Barnes will follow before another vocal set featuring works by Carmen McRae. Bigger bands are next with the Tadd Dameron Orchestra, Toshiko Akiyoshi Lew Tabackin Big Band and The Quincy Jones Orchestra. From there we will re-revisit Andrew Hill's "Beautiful Day" recording with his Sextet Plus 10 from a new reissue. Quintets follow with Thad Jones/Pepper Adams, Bill Holman / Mel Lewis, Jack Montrose All Stars and finally Marta Sánchez. The David Murray Quartet with Marta Sanchez will take us out.
