Non autorizzato, ma assolutamente benvenuto da parte sia degli appassionati dei Beach Boys che di chi magari ha della band un'idea superficiale, questo documentario in doppio DVD ripercorre le vicende di Brian Wilson e soci dal 1962 al 1969.
Con il taglio tipico e efficace della documentaristica anglosassone di questi anni, alternando immagini di repertorio a interviste a molti collaboratori, critici, musicisti, amici, testimoni, queste quasi tre ore scorrono godibilissime, dalla nascita della surf music al fallimento di Smile e danno una buona resa delle condizioni sociali e artistiche in cui nascono i Beach Boys e in cui il talento di compositore e produttore di Wilson può affermarsi.
Spazio quindi a filmati, scene di film, alla musica di tanti capolavori come "Wouldn't It Be Nice" o "Good Vibrations," spazio alle analisi di specialisti come Domenic Priore o Phil Lambert, ai ricordi di musicisti come Bruce Johnston o Carol Kaye, spazio agli aneddoti e alle tante traversie che hanno accompagnato le vicende del gruppo.
Con un ritmo incalzante che non sacrifica però il senso della narrazione, il documentario [con due extra] è caldamente consigliato.
Il genio di Brian Wilson è intramontabile.
