Industrious Noise: Trio

Un trio insolito, senza contrabbassista, che quindi si prende più libertà del solito dal punto di vista ritmico. Il progetto che fa capo al chitarrista Phil Sargent ripercorre a lunghe campate situazioni in cui il jazz viene rivissuto in tutta la sua storia fin dall’inizio: un duo sax alto/chitarra quasi "cool" che ripercorre le tracce lasciate da Billy Bauer e Lee Konitz. Il lungo brano - "Nugget" - riserva tuttavia delle sorprese, perchè i tre si divertono a spiazzare gli ascoltatori e la chitarra diventa più materica quando i ritmi di Mike Connors cominciano a incalzare spremendo dall'ottimo sassofono di Chris Veilleux suoni più urbani. La title-track, "Trio", dimostra come si possano conciliare - in termini di fruibilità - ritmo e melodia, rendendo tutto molto recepibile, nonostante le strutture abbastanza aperte.

Il disco nel suo seguito non smentisce questa attitudine a costruire nei brani un ampio affresco multicolore: si ascolti il finale "Makedonya", in cui il balcanico ed il rock convivono senza problemi. I tre strumentisti si divertono a suonare e sanno trasmettere la loro gioia all'ascoltatore, stimolandolo anche a ripassare le sue conoscenze musicali in modo divertente.

Alla fine del disco resta un che di inconcluso e la voglia di ascoltare dal vivo come funziona una band del genere, che con un timbro così asciutto riesce a mettere insieme diversità sonore che al di fuori delle loro mani sembravano difficili da immaginare.
