Sarah Bernstein: Still/Free

Nuovo talento in equilibrio tra jazz e poesia, musica per archi e improvvisazione, Sarah Bernstein introduce questo Still/Free con un lungo brano di squisito minimalismo ipnotico, poche note tematiche che lasciano il segno di una sensibilità particolare, interessata certo più alla musica di gruppo piuttosto che ad una vetrina per violino solista. Anzi, lo strumento sotto le dita di Sarah è rarefatto e sornione, le sue frasi legate hanno consistenza liquida, in bell'amalgama con quelle del piano di Kris Davis, mai così sorvegliato e "classico" come in queste tracce.

Anche Ches Smith dà qui prova di serenità e compostezza, pur condizionando con le nuvole sonore dei suoi piatti l'insieme delle esecuzioni. Che si accendono ritmicamente in "Cede," dopo i primi due pezzi al rallentatore. Qui arrivano i tempi composti, mossi, un tema boppistico vagamente marziale e improvvisazioni jazz: quella di Kris Davis davvero memorabile, dapprima ad una sola mano, poi arricchita da armonie ricche, incalzanti.

Il basso di Stuart Popejoy trova spazio in "Nightmorning," composizione bitematica che intreccia scrittura e parti estemporanee con bella eleganza. Il disco, che poteva sembrare fin troppo crepuscolare, si distende invece con bella varietà d'accenti e si avvicina alla musica astratta e indeterminata in "4=": qui Sarah Bernstein si impegna in assolo con disinvoltura, ma tutto il quartetto si lascia andare con audaci scarti espressivi e sovrapposizioni stilistiche altrove assenti.

Gli ultimi solchi danno spazio anche a pronunce rock e voce recitante.

Un progetto senz'altro riuscito, pur con sicuri margini di miglioramento.
