Soulception è il nuovo album di Monday Michiru. La vocalist e flautista giapponese, che vanta una ventennale carriera e collaborazioni con esponenti della scena acid-jazz (tra cui Mondo Grosso), ritorna con un altro lavoro raffinato e variegato supportata da un solido gruppo di musicisti di estrazione jazz.

C'è spazio per le atmosfere brasiliane in pezzi come "What Is in a Soul" e "Brasilianos" (Hamilton de Holanda), quest'ultima impreziosita dall'organetto di Gil Goldstein, mentre nella cover di "Bridges" (Milton Nascimento) la voce dell'artista giapponese incontra quella di Ed Motta.

"Native Tongue" mescola bossanova con ritmi funk-jazz e si fa apprezzare per gli impeccabili vocalizzi della Michiru e per le frequenti variazioni ritmiche, mentre in "Map Of The Soul" (composta da Teri Shibuya), la vocalist mostra la sua sensibilità soul coadiuvata anche dagli interventi ai fiati di Alex Sipiagin.

L'album si chiude con i toni raccolti e intimisti di "What Defines You" che sfoggia un arrangiamento "unplugged," per solo chitarra e voce.

Soulception si rivela un'altra prova della creatività artistica di Monday Michiru, da sempre in grado di comporre e scomporre acid-jazz, soul, pop e bossanova. A fare la differenza è anche la sua vocalità suadente e ricca di anima e gli arrangiamenti le rendono giustizia rendendo il disco multisfaccettato ma mai dispersivo. Sin dagli inizi della carriera Monday Michiru si è dimostrata coerente al suo stile grazie senza piegarsi alle rigide regole del mercato e questo nuovo lavoro non deluderà i fan dell'artista.
