Sonhos, Pesadelos & An American Tune

Dreams and nightmares this week on Caminhos do Jazz, with a host of superb Brazilian performers, including singers Maria Bethânia, Gal Costa, Alaide Costa, Lenine and the MPB group Nação Zumbi. The set also includes a cut by the extraordinary Norwegian world-jazz ensemble Music for a While, featuring vocalist Tora Augestad, and one from the renowned Beninois guitarist Lionel Loueke. The final segment of the program offers a few great American performances, including Ben Webster's exquisite "Over the Rainbow" with Hank Jones and Richard Davis, plus Kurt Elling's breathtaking rendition of Paul Simon's "American Tune." The broadcast ends with its seed, Bill Charlap's elegantly simple solo-piano take on Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim's "Somewhere."

As a brief curtain call, we hear a short excerpt of the Dave Brubeck Quartet with the folksinging trio Peter, Paul and Mary, performing "Because All Men are Brothers." Lyric is by Tom Glazer and Pete Seeger (1948). The piece is based on the same medieval hymn as "American Tune" (you may know the Bach chorale). I was not familiar with "Because All Men Are Brothers" and found it profoundly moving (check the elegant pandemic-era YouTube, below). There are many other worthy versions, including J.S. Bach's chorale, "O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden" (BWV 244, Pt. 2: No. 54) and Rhiannon Giddens' aptly altered lyric. Leaving them up to you...
