Inside Jazz Quartet: Portraits

Un quartetto paritetico composto da musicisti di esperienza e riconosciuto valore mette in scena brani di alcuni dei più importanti protagonisti del jazz moderno quali sono Steve Swallow e Wayne Shorter, Thelonious Monk e Carla Bley, per arrivare fino a Yusef Lateef.

Non c'è invero nulla di "rivoluzionario," né di particolarmente "innovativo" nell'album, così come nel progetto, ma "solo"—e scusate se è poco—l'idea di entrare a modo proprio, ancorché con il massimo rispetto, dentro alcune composizioni di Maestri che è doveroso omaggiare se si è appassionati di questa musica. Composizioni, oltretutto, perlopiù poco frequentate, come nel caso di quelle di Swallow, un po' trascurato come compositore ("Remember," "Let's Eat" e "Muddy in the Bank"), o di Shorter (la splendida "Aung San Suu Kyi," "Prince of Darkness" e "Penelope," le prime due con Tino Tracanna scintillante al soprano).

Ma le perle del CD sono forse una trasformata (e poco monkiana) "Evidence," una rilassata ed espressiva "Morning" di Lateef—nella quale Tracanna dà un saggio della sua maestria al tenore, Massimo Colombo prende un solo tra piano e Fender e Attilio Zanchi attraversa l'intero brano sostenendolo con il tema dettato dal contrabbasso—e la classica "Ida Lupino" della Bley, sempre splendida ma non per questo facile da interpretare senza cadere nel cliché.

A completare l'ottimo CD, una brevissima composizione di Colombo, "Yangon," e una poco più lunga improvvisazione di gruppo, "Alba," forse dedicata alla nascita del quartetto.

Le esecuzioni dei brani sono perfette, le interpretazioni magistrali, l'album assolutamente godibile, a dimostrare che è possibile sfornare eccellenza anche con "semplice" jazz moderno—a condizione che a suonarlo siano musicisti eccellenti.
