Le mille facce di Miles Davis.

Discutere di Miles Davis è un esercizio sempre eccitante: il trombettista di Alton, Illinois, è stato uno degli artisti più importanti della storia e ogni sua fase artistica è ampia e ben documentata. L'abbondanza di materiale fortunatamente non va mai a discapito della qualità. Miles è riuscito in questo miracolo perché ha sempre saputo guardare avanti, rifiutando di fermarsi a crogiolarsi all'ombra dei successi. Solo una volta ha accettato di rivisitare se stesso. E lo ha fatto proprio pochi mesi prima di lasciarci, al Festival di Montreux.

Il materiale recensito in questo speciale ci permette di ripercorrere la sua carriera dalla fase iniziale fino ai primi grandi successi della fine degli anni cinquanta (documentata nel mega-cofanetto di 34 CD e un CDRom The Complete Recordings 1945-1960), di scoprire le meraviglie del tour europeo con Coltrane (prima che quest'ultimo abbandonasse il gruppo di Miles per far partire la sua straordinaria carriera solistica) racchiuse nei tre CD di The Legendary 1960 European Tour, di analizzare le sue performance col quintetto nel periodo stilisticamente più elegante (grazie al libro di Keith Waters "The Studio Recordings of the Miles Davis Quintet, 1965-68"), di godere delle sue performance live in Europa all'apice del successo (contenute nel 'bootleg ufficiale' Live In Europe 1967: The Bootleg Series Vol. 1 che avevamo recensito qualche mese fa) e di osservarlo all'opera, in dieci occasioni consecutive, nel più prestigioso festival del jazz che il vecchio continente ha saputo mantenere nel corso degli anni (il cofanetto DVD Miles! The Definitive Miles Davis at Montreux DVD Collection - 1973-1991.
