We'll kick things off with some Latin energy from Mongo Santamaria and his Orchestra, recorded live at the Black Hawk in San Francisco in 1962. Next, we'll hear The Incredible Jimmy Smith with "Midnight Special" from his classic 1966 LP of the same name. Following that, we have some guitar music from alto saxophonist Tim Berne's new release Yikes Too, featuring drummer Tom Rainey and guitarist Gregg Belisle-Chi. Composer and organizer John Zorn will then take the spotlight with a 2019 selection from his "Bagatelles" series, performed by the Mary Halvorson Quartet. We'll also highlight albums recorded on this weekend in history, including Elmo Hope's The Elmo Hope Trio (1956), Bobby Hutcherson's Happenings (1966), John Coltrane's Soultrane (1958), and Hank Mobley's Soul Station (1960). A selection from each album will be featured.
A birthday tribute to pianist Jutta Hipp will follow. Hipp, born 100 years ago this month in 1925 in Germany, recorded from 1952 to 1956. Then, we'll hear tunes by '80s pop icon George Michael, as performed by JoAnne Brackeen and the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio.
