Articolato in forma ibrida tra una storia del jazz ed un manuale basilare di estetica, è un testo che non vale le migliori opere pubblicate negli ultimi anni in Italia sull'argomento. Sol per citarne alcune, quelle di Vincenzo Caporaletti, Maurizio Franco, Marcello Piras, Claudio Sessa, Stefano Zenni e andando più indietro negli anni la fondamentale storia del jazz di Arrigo Polillo.

Benché uscito nel 2000 nel mercato statunitense, il saggio presenta un antiquato impianto metodologico a griglie stilistiche, ormai superato dalla più accorta storiografia, con omissioni (Herbie Nichols) e striminzite citazioni (Andrew Hill, Woody Shaw) chissà quanto giustificabili in un libro del terzo millennio.

Alcuni ritratti racchiusi in poche righe lo rendono talora più simile ad un bignami che ad una opera storiografica. Valgano per tutte le 12 righe dedicate a Lester Young, le 36 su Bud Powell, le 23 per Roy Eldridge, i rimandi ad Earl Hines solo in riferimento all'incisione del '28 con Armstrong, la pagina e mezza di Coltrane a fronte delle 2 e mezzo dedicate a Wynton Marsalis. Di Dolphy si parla in 21 righe di testo, nella sezione "Altri musicisti degli anni '60," mentre 5 sono le pagine sull'acid-jazz, drum'n'bass, neo swing.

La parte più debole, quasi inconsistente, è quella che tratteggia le forme del jazz, dove si dice poco o nulla; quella più convincente è incentrata sul jazz contemporaneo, sia pur con l'eccessivo spazio riservato a Marsalis a fronte delle 14 righe per Julius Hemphill, 13 per Henry Threadgill e le 11 per John Carter.

Dispiace segnalare alcuni errori che portano l'autore a far nascere Mingus in New Mexico anziché in Arizona, attribuire Cantaloupe Island a Wayne Shorter, indicare accelerazioni e decelerazioni in "Requiem" di Lennie Tristano, che si ritrovano invece in "Line-Up".

Desta qualche perplessità anche la bibliografia italiana, dove ad esempio compare in una ristrettissima lista "SienaJazzEye: 500 copertine di jazz" anziché il libro di Salvatore su Parker e quelli di Caporaletti sull'estetica jazzistica.

A conti fatti, non sarebbe stato forse meglio per EDT e Siena Jazz inaugurare la loro collana con un'opera più pregante ed incisiva?
