Mark Turner: Reflections on: The Autobiography on an Ex-Colored Man
L'opera si srotola quindi attorno alla suddetta storia di un giovane uomo "birazziale" (ex-colored), nato in Georgia poco dopo la guerra civile (1861/65), vicenda ovviamente offerta in pillole, e ha il grande pregio della completezza, ammesso che la stessa possa esistere, nel senso che è attraversata da una bella sensazione di pienezza globale, di interazione fra parlato e suonato, forse con l'unico limite di apparire qua e là magari lievemente incapsulata entro le maglie dell'intenzionalità di cui dicevamo, che finisce di conseguenza per esserne nel contempo pregio e, appunto, potenziale neo (assolutamente minimo, per la verità).
Il valore dell'opera, del resto, non è in discussione, fondandosi la stessa su una solidità inventiva ed esecutiva, una pienezza globale (l'abbiamo già detto), indiscutibili. Ottimo il suono d'insieme, così come le trame tessute di volta in volta dai singoli membri di un quintetto coi fiocchi. La grammatica è quella di un jazz attuale senza particolari voli pindarici. Solido, appunto, ma di una solidità che non opprime o satura. Un album che non mancherà certo di estimatori.
