I 10 CD nel CD-Player di.... Jeff Albert
Trovare un buon equilibrio tra forma e libertà in ensemble di medio/grandi dimensioni è veramente difficile. Jason c'è riuscito molto bene in questo disco con alcuni dei miei musicisti preferiti di Chicago.
02. Alvin Fielder/Dave Dove/Jason Jackson/Damon Smith -From-to-From (Balance Point Acoustics -2013).
Vi è una fervida scena improvvisativa e artistica a Houston, Texas, e questo CD è un buon esempio di quello che stanno suonando lì.
03. Roscoe Mitchell -Before There Was Sound (Nessa -2011).
L'ho comprato da Alvin Fielder in occasione di una sua performance a New Orleans e vede Mitchell impegnato in sessioni inedite, precedenti al suo album di debutto.
04. Russ Johnson Quartet -Meeting Point (Relay Recordings -2014).
Tromba e clarinetto basso come front-line originano un grande suono.
05. Tim Daisy Quartet -Streets in Time (Relay Recordings -2013).
A New Orleans due anni fa Tim suonò per me alcune cose tratte da questo album che mi entusiasmarono. Steve Swell è uno dei miei eroi.
06. Rob Mazurek Pulsar Quartet -Stellar Pulsations (Delmark -2012).
Immagino che la mia affinità con i musicisti di Chicago risulti a questo punto evidente...
07. Brad Webb -Making Faces (Independent -2014).
Non so se sia già stato pubblicato ufficialmente, ma Brad me ne ha data una copia che sta girando continuamente nel lettore! Presenta alcuni dei più interessanti giovani musicisti di New Orleans.
08. Robert Palmer -Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley (Island -1974).
In diversi brani The Meters fungono da backing band e ciò rende tutto molto funky. La title track è stata regolarmente nella scaletta del mio tour con George Porter Jr..
09. Lake Street Dive -Fun Machine (Signature Sounds -2012).
Questo è una sorta di colpevole piacere. Canzoni della mia infanzia con nuovi e freschi arrangiamenti più una grande canzone originale.
10. Jacob Garchik -The Heavens (The Atheist Gospel Trombone Album) (Yestereve Recordings -2012).
Non sono un gran estimatore delle formazioni con trombone, ma questa è davvero grande musica. Il trombone suona alla grande ma soprattutto è musica appassionata e avvincente.
