Mats Gustafsson / Ken Vandermark / Tomeka Reid / Chad Taylor: PIVOT

Read "PIVOT" reviewed by Mark Corroto

Do not judge a friend for buying a lottery ticket when the jackpot climbs to some astronomical sum. The odds of hitting the winning combination may be just as astronomical, but the dollar spent buys something more valuable than probability: a few hours of dreaming, imagining another life. Speaking of combinations, the newly formed quartet Pivot ...

Chicago Underground Duo: Hyperglyph

International Anthem is a fitting home for the first Chicago Underground Duo album after an 11-year hiatus. Gabriele Mitelli Three Tsuru Origami: Colapesce

Read "Colapesce" reviewed by Mark Corroto

The second release from Gabriele Mitelli's Three Tsuru Origami ensemble shifts from the literal to the symbolic, expanding both in concept and personnel. This follow-up, Colapesce, draws inspiration from the 12th-century Sicilian legend of a half-man, half-fish who sacrifices himself to ...

Stemeseder Lillinger + Craig Taborn: Umbra III

Read "Umbra III" reviewed by Mark Corroto

Sometimes, the subversion of established paradigms unfolds through incremental variations and subtle shifts in the status quo--so gradual they can be almost imperceptible. Other times, transformation arrives in the form of unexpected revolutions, seismic and undeniable. Somewhere between these two extremes lie the musical experiments of Elias Stemeseder and Christian Lillinger. The Austrian-German duo--pianist, ...

Rob Mazurek Quartet: Color Systems

Read "Color Systems" reviewed by Alberto Bazzurro
