Jazz em Agosto 2026, Part 2
On the seventh day, we had the opportunity to hear Anna Webber: Shimmer Wince at the Open-Air Amphitheater of Gulbenkian Garden. The quintet features Anna Webber on tenor saxophone, flute, Adam O'Farrill on trumpet, Mariel Roberts on cello, Elias Stemeseder on synthesizer and Lesley Mok on drums.
The eight night put the spotlight on Ches Smith—on drums, vibraphone, and electronics—and his project Clone Row, featuring Mary Halvorson and Liberty Ellman on electric guitars and Nick Dunston on double bass, electronics.
Day nine began with a sold-out performance by pianist Pat Thomas, followed at the Open-Air Amphitheater by Tomas Fujiwara: Dream Up, featuring Tomas Fujiwara on drums and as composer, Ches Smith on vibraphone and percussion, Kaoru Watanabe on taiko drums, Japanese flutes and Kweku Sumbry on djembe, balafon and ngoni.
The festival's final day opened with Chicago Underground Duo, Hyperglyph, featuring Chad Taylor on drums, percussion, mbira and kalimba and Rob Mazurek on trumpet, piccolo trumpet, electric piano, modular synthesizers, samplers, vocals, flute, and bells. The performance took an unexpected turn when trumpeter and saxophonist James Brandon Lewis joined the duo for the finale. Later, the program moved to the Open-Air Amphitheater in the Gulbenkian Garden for a performance by SML, the supergroup featuring Anna Butterss on electric bass, Jeremiah Chiu on synthesizer, sampling and percussion, Josh Johnson on saxophone and electronics, Booker Stardum on drums and percussion and Gregory Uhlmann on electric guitar and effects. Their performance brought the 42nd edition of the Jazz em Agosto Festival to a close with an adventurous and richly textured conclusion.
