The Dan Trudell Trio: Dan Trudell Plays the Piano
L'aver privilegiato a lungo l'Hammond B3 non ha indotto Dan Trudell ad abbandonare il pianoforte, strumento in cui s'è formato e diplomato alla North Texas State University. Trasferitosi a Chicago nel 1990 ha iniziato ad affiancare il ruolo di pianista a quello di organista formando un organico col batterista funk Clyde Stubblefield e iniziando un'apprezzata atività professionale.
In questo trio con il bassista Joe Sanders e il batterista Matt Wilson, Trudell si pone nel rassicurante alveo del modern mainstream, con uno stile enciclopedico che condensa più di un modello e privilegia di volta in volta maestri come McCoy Tyner (a cui dedica espressamente un brano "McCoy for Now"), Red Garland o Tommy Flanagan. Nel suo stile privilegia un pianismo incisivo, sviluppando vorticosi fraseggi dalla swingante intensità ritmica, ma non mancano momenti riflessivi, ricchi di finezze armoniche e eleganti spunti melodici.

Il repertorio spazia da classici come "The Old Black Magic" e "I Let a Song Out of My Heart" a temi recenti come "The Worth of a Woman" di Alicia Keys passando per rivisitazioni di "Isn't She Lovely" di Stevie Wonder, con cui apre il disco. La relazione coi partner è ricca e lascia emergere spazi per il bassista, con lunghi assoli al pizzicato (con sovrapposta la voce sul modello Slam Stewart) con l'uso dell'archetto.
