Omar Rios Melendez And Alex Wilson: The Art of Deep Connection

The Art of Deep Connection is an aptly-titled duo album from Omar Rios Melendez and Alex Wilson. Their seamless blend of jazz, flamenco and Latino music sparkles with close affinity and combined virtuosity. Additionally, the album's concept emphasizes the importance of genuine, physical human connection in an age increasingly dominated by virtual interactions.

The opening track, "La Mora Limpia," often considered one of Latin America's anthems, features Ríos Meléndez's guitar and Wilson's piano played with such rhythmic intensity and precision that the two instruments almost seem to merge into a single voice, weaving together melody and passionate improvisation.

Pianist Wilson, a Swiss-British national, is a leading Latin jazz specialist whose career spans nine studio albums and numerous production credits. He has also served as musical director for the Grammy-winning Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela. Nicaraguan guitarist Ríos Meléndez, now based in London, has released two studio albums, with Wilson appearing on the second, after the pair discovered each other's work via social media during the pandemic.

"Yo No Sé Mañana" (I Don't Know Tomorrow) was a major hit for Nicaraguan singer Luis Enrique, winning a Latin Grammy Award. The duo slightly reins in the original salsa tempo while preserving the song's essence, with the guitar assuming the vocal lines over Wilson's propulsive piano. The arrangement then opens out with superb improvisations from both musicians, making it one of the album's creative highlights. As Ríos Meléndez explains, "I wanted to stay close to the originals but include arrangements that allow for improvisation and take you into a different mood."

There are two solo tracks; Wilson lets in plenty of space in his beautiful version of Mexican songwriter Consuelo Velázquez's classic 1930s bolero "Bésame Mucho," while "Lanzaté," a tune Wilson wrote with Ríos Meléndez in mind, features high-speed guitar work before unfolding into a relaxing melody.

Ríos Meléndez's forceful narrative compositions, "Nomad's Prayer (Part 1)" and "Nomad's Prayer (Part 2)," are based around the issues immigrants face when first arriving in London. In contrast, he offers a more gentle style of his writing with the peaceful charm of "Water Reflection."

Calling a musician a virtuoso is perhaps an overused term, but it truly applies here—both deliver outstanding performances and genuinely play from the heart. The album offers a well-paced blend of originals and covers that dazzles with intimacy, energy and risk, making this a sweet and joyous treat.
