We have lots of good news to share this week. First, we're aware of the occasional access issues some of you have experienced, and after a deep investigation this week, we finally identified the root causes. The fixes we'll implement over the coming days are permanent, so we're optimistic that All About Jazz and Jazz Near You will soon be more reliable, more responsive and faster than ever.
We've also made some design changes to All About Jazz this past week, and you may have noticed a more spacious appearance.
We're in the planning stages of our community badging program and have begun reporting on member participation across the platform, from article authors to Jazz Near You event listers. If you're curious about who's helping build the community, we've assembled a growing collection of Top 100 reports:
One eye-popping discovery from this effort: the late John Kelman's articles have been read an astonishing 71,472,662 times. That's a remarkable legacy and a testament to his tireless efforts to make All About Jazz a better place for everyone.
"What many people outside Ukraine still do not fully understand is that Ukraine today is simultaneously a country at war and a functioning cultural ecosystem. International media understandably focuses on military developments, destruction, and geopolitics, but behind those headlines there are thousands of musicians, educators, festival organizers, journalists, curators, and cultural managers who continue working every day."
At 89, bassist Ron Carter remains one of jazz's towering figures, and his appearance at the reimagined Tri-C JazzFest stood out as one of the festival's few presentations by a universally recognized mainstream jazz artist. Making his first local appearance in years, Carter brought his Foursight Quartet—formed in 2019—to the intimate Hanna Theatre for an early afternoon performance that balanced elegance, authority and understated virtuosity. Even recurring problems with his bass pickup failed to disrupt the performance, as Carter dismissed the technical interruptions with the unflappable poise that has defined his career. Drummer Payton Crossley set the performance in motion with a concise, textural introduction that flowed naturally into "Seven Steps to Heaven." Bassist / composer / group leader Pedro Molina has released a searing, spontaneous album called A Name I Knew (Carimbo Porta-jazz, 2026). A Name I Knew received 4 stars from All About Jazz. In addition to the 8-song suite reflecting a struggle with Alzheimer's Disease by someone close to him, Molina created an experimental music video for the lead track, "Denial." AAJ interviewed him about his creative process and takeaways from making the video. This may help other musicians decide whether to take on a similarly abstract video approach. Continue reading...
Mick Goodrick (1945-2022) is a legend among jazz guitarists as a teacher, author, and mentor to John Scofield, Bill Frisell, and many more. Known as "Mr. Goodchord," Goodrick was a leading theorist in voice leading for guitar and his 1987 book The Advancing Guitarist has been a fundamental text for a generation. It eschews exercises and method in favor of essays that create a conceptual system of the instrument. He could have had a busy performing career, but instead decided to write and teach. That said, on July 10 ECM will re-issue In Pas(s)ing, Goodrick's 1979 ECM debut. On June 19, ECM released Feebles, Fables And Ferns (ECM Records, 2026), a forgotten 1988 duo with Fred Hersch. Ron Carter Foursight Quartet at the 47th Annual Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland
