About the Album
Irina, by drummer Joe Chambers, reflects the expanding rhythmic and structural vocabulary that would later define modern jazz. Named for Eirene, the ancient Greek personification of peace, the composition juxtaposes shifting meters, irregular phrase lengths, and harmonically ambiguous passages—elements that were strikingly prescient for their time. In the context of Civil Disobedience, the piece underscores how deeply this late-’60s repertoire anticipated later developments, challenging the notion that innovation in jazz followed a clean chronological arc.
