Chris Potter: The Dreamer Is the Dream
Ed è proprio il pianista di origine cubana David Virelles che allontana l'album dalle sabbie mobili di un jazz eccessivamente manieristico. Basterebbe lo strepitoso assolo in "Yasodhara" -un mix di lirismo e dissonanze, di impeto e di dolcezza, di spigoli e di curve -ad illuminare la scena, ma Virelles dissemina per tutto l'album piccole meraviglie armoniche e illuminanti controcanti.
Potter dà ampia dimostrazione della sua versatilità strumentale con una misurata introduzione al clarinetto basso nella title-track, con il fluido eloquio del sax soprano nella pastorale "Memory and Desire" e con un infuocato intervento al tenore nella già citata "Yasodhara," il brano più complesso e interessante tra le sei composizioni originali del leader. All'altezza il resto del quartetto con Joe Martin autore di un vibrante assolo in "The Dreamer is the Dream" e Marcus Gilmore sempre pertinente e mai invasivo con le sue percussioni.
