Dan Weiss: Sixteen: Drummers Suite

Sixteen, ossia il numero di componenti -alcuni usuali collaboratori del leader altri scelti appositamente per l'occasione, tutti comunque musicisti dalla mente aperta e dalle larghe visioni -dell'ensemble allestito da Dan Weiss per omaggiare alcuni dei più grandi batteristi della storia del jazz. Una "Drummers suite" per l'appunto, ma non pensate ad una carrellata di stili o ad una versione celebrativa dei momenti più significativi della storia dei vari Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams e compagnia bella.

Perché il disco è opera autonoma, originale, potente a tratti visionaria, 100% Dan Weiss, nella quale il leader riversa le sue molteplici esperienze musicali e di vita, su tutte la più che ventennale frequentazione con il guru e maestro di tabla Pandit Samir Chatterjee. E se è vero che i brani prendono spunto da minuscole cellule ritmiche estrapolate da alcuni famosi album della storia del jazz come Our Man in Paris, Nefertiti, Deeds, Not Words per citarne alcuni, di prettamente jazzistico, se non nella sensibilità e nella coloritura personale dei protagonisti, troviamo ben poco.

Sixteen: Drummers Suite ha il respiro di un'opera nella quale i riferimenti sono piuttosto alcuni compositori contemporanei, la musica classica indiana, l'innesto del sistema metrico della tabla in un contesto prettamente occidentale, con il coro di voci femminili, sirene incantatorie e ingannevoli, di volta in volta alle prese con l'elettricità di sintetizzatori e chitarra così come di delicati contrappunti o di potenti crescendo dell'intero ensemble.

Lavoro complesso e stratificato che rivela meraviglie ad ogni ascolto Sixteen: Drummers Suite possiede fascino immediato e coinvolgente creatività.
