Le corde. Quelle classiche, prestigiose, dei violini del Balanescu Quartet o della London Symphony Orchestra e quelle elettriche, delle chitarre di Rick Fenn, Larry Coryell, Mike Stern. I testi. Quelli di Samuel Beckett, Harold Pinter, Paul Auster, Giuseppe Ungaretti. Le voci. Di Mona Larsen, Karen Mantler, Jack Bruce, Marianne Faithfull, ma soprattutto quella unica, inconfondibile, senza tempo e fuori dal tempo di Robert Wyatt. La sensibilità jazzistica. Quella selvaggia della Jazz Composer’s Orchestra e quella raffinata e sofisticata dei piccoli ensemble con Carla Bley al piano.

Sono queste le principali coordinate che caratterizzano Hide and Seek, una sorta di Best of... scelto personalmente da Michael Mantler. Pensato come un giro del mondo (musicale) in trentatre anni e quindici album, curiosamente a ritroso nel tempo, con partenza e arrivo ad Hide and Seek, opera pubblicata nel 2000, Review è una grande finestra aperta sul complesso mondo musicale del trombettista e compositore di origine viennese.

Come tutte le compilation non ha la pretesa di essere esaustiva e definitiva sulla vita artistica del musicista, ma i settantacinque minuti di Review sono un’ideale approccio al vasto corpo musicale prodotto da Mantler e offrono più di uno spunto di interesse anche per chi ne è già in confidenza.

E’ infatti un vero piacere ascoltare, senza soluzione di continuità, le evoluzioni del Balanescu Quartet immediatamente seguite dalla roca voce di Jack Bruce alle prese con Samuel Beckett e da quella vissuta di Marianne Faithfull su testi di Philippe Soupault. Oppure essere investiti dal suono possente e austero della grande orchestra nell’inedito 13, per la prima volta su CD, idealmente contrappuntato dall’esile tromba di Don Cherry. Per non parlare poi della furiosa improvvisazione al sax tenore di Pharoah Sanders nella già citata Jazz Composer’s Orchestra (1968) seguita da un dialogo da brivido tra Robert Wyatt e Susi Hildgaard (2000) con la fisarmonica a creare un fondale naive, in una cronologica chiusura del cerchio.
