Roberto Gatto Quintet: Remembering Shelly
Da qui l'idea di proporre alcuni brani dal repertorio suonato da Shelly Manne and His Man al leggendario Black Hawk di San Francisco, l'individuazione del locale adatto per questa registrazione dal vivo (siamo all'Alexanderplatz di Roma, a fine aprile 2009) e la scelta dei componenti della band da portare sul palco.
Il batterista romano ha affidato il suo lavoro di trascrizione (non esistono spartiti dei brani proposti) a musicisti capaci di calarsi con precisione assoluta in un gioco di squadra millimetrico, ma anche, e soprattutto, di personalizzare con interventi di ottima incisività un set che concede pochissimo ai momenti di pausa e che lascia il segno, principalmente, per alcuni assoli mozzafiato.
Il risultato è un album poderoso, dalla grana artistica importante e dalla doppia personalità: perché se da una parte Gatto, Mannutza e Bassi sono riusciti a creare percorsi di geometrica eleganza; dall'altra Ionata e Tamburini hanno affrescato con pennellate di fantasia un arrangiamento colmo di spunti d'interesse.
