Vibraphonist Patricia Brennan put together a very strong ensemble to make Breaking Stretch, one of the best releases of 2024. Her original compositions and ever-growing skills on her instrument draw on elements of her native Mexico, and that helps to set apart this terrific new album. The free jazz scene of Mexico City gets additional space in the music of the trio, Tulpas. You may never have heard of saxophonist Ornella Noulet, guitarist Roman Raynaud, pianist LoÏc Lengagne, bassist Anthony Jouravsky, and drummer Egon Wolfson, but you've heard of the musician whose spirit drives this quintet from Europe: John Coltrane. The title of their new recording Ola Tunji, and the band's name, is a good clue. This debut is high quality music. Veteran English free jazz saxophonist Paul Dunmall, joined by two other icons of the British Free Jazz scene—bassist Paul Rodgers and the late drummer Tony Levin—are heard on The Good Feelings, a never-heard-before album, while bassist Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten continues a run of amazing playing, this time with his own band, Exit Knarr, dedicating Breezy to the late Jamie Branch. These are just some of the highlights of a 3-hour blast of powerful music in this edition of One Man's Jazz.
