Johan Lindstrom: On the Asylum
Perchè On the Asylum è proprio questo, a partire dal recitativo iniziale di Costello, le sue parole, la sua voce, la sua inflessione, il soffio soffuso di ance e ottoni come fondale e una musicalità quasi prorompente. Poi arriva «Twenty Twenty», un tema alla "Peter Gunn" con un riff assassino, difficile da dimenticare. «Homeward» è una dolce ballad il cui crescendo intenerisce anche le scorze più dure. Nemmeno il tempo di crogiolarsi in tanta bellezza che arriva «The Prom» atmosfere noir, locali fumosi, la pupa di turno evocati con un lungo piano sequenza. Richiamo alla settima arte non casuale dato che l'intero lavoro si sviluppa come una sequenza di quadri sonori, scene musicali che raccontano storie, evocano paesaggi, creano atmosfere, tratteggiano personaggi immaginari. E ti fanno viaggiare sulle ali della fantasia.
