Fredrik Nordström: Big Band Stories

Read "Big Band Stories" reviewed by Mark Corroto

To describe this record as an intimate big band recording is not to state an oxymoron. Saxophonist, composer and arranger Fredrik Nordström has taken this large-scale format (17 musicians) and made a very personal statement. Big Band Stories is a bit of a departure for the Swedish saxophonist best known for his work in quintet, octet and his Dolores Quartet which released Dolores: One (2021) and Dolores: Two (2021) on his own Bluenord Record label. Nordström did produce ...

Per "Texas" Johansson: Orkester Omnitonal / Den sämsta lösningen av alla

Read "Per "Texas" Johansson: Orkester Omnitonal / Den sämsta lösningen av alla" reviewed by Vincenzo Roggero

Read "Per Texas Johansson, Anke Helfrich & Machine Mass Sextet" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

Last show of another year of great music, and I usually try to do something special or different, but I was kind of tapped out for ideas until I happened to come across We'll Rise, a new recording by German pianist and singer, Anke Helfrich. I loved the message she was trying to convey through her music and recognized a real talent. So even if this one tends more to the mainstream than I usually play, I chose Anke's album ...

Konrad Agnas: Rite of Passage

Read "Rite of Passage" reviewed by Alberto Bazzurro

Daniel Bingert: Ariba

Read "Ariba" reviewed by Vincenzo Roggero

Barry Guy Blue Shroud Band: all this this here

Read "all this this here" reviewed by John Sharpe

Bassist and composer Barry Guy combines a number of his passions on All This This Here in a stunning act of synthesis. For the third major work for his Blue Shroud Band, following its eponymous debut (Intakt, 2016) and Odes And Meditations For Cecil Taylor (Not Two, 2018), Guy sets to music Nobel winning playwright Samuel Beckett's last poem What Is The Word (in two versions, both the original French and the English translation, which bookend the program).
