Last show of another year of great music, and I usually try to do something special or different, but I was kind of tapped out for ideas until I happened to come across We'll Rise, a new recording by German pianist and singer, Anke Helfrich. I loved the message she was trying to convey through her music and recognized a real talent. So even if this one tends more to the mainstream than I usually play, I chose Anke's album as the year-end feature. It's in hour three. There's new music from the great Swedish saxophonist Per Texas Johansson, from Off Records (Machine Mass, Macondo Trio and pianist Jesse Elder), Thomas Heberer's Remedy, and sizzling bassist Carlos Barretto from Portugal. Top that off with a preview of an upcoming release by Kahil El'Zabar's Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, and it's a worthy show to wrap up '23. On to 2024 and the continuing proof that JAZZ THRIVES! (Note: this episode may be unavailable in some countries. Contact me and I'll happily send it to you.)
