Sarah Elizabeth Charles: Inner Dialogue

Read "Inner Dialogue" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

Trying to categorize or label vocalist Sarah Elizabeth Charles is a futile pursuit. Is she a hypnotic modern jazz vocalist? Is she a neo-soul experimentalist with jazz and R&B inflections oozing from her vocal cords? Is she an incredible talent, bewitching and beguiling with her every vocal gesture? Is she all of that, yet something completely ...

Matt Parker: Worlds Put Together

Read "Worlds Put Together" reviewed by Hrayr Attarian

Genre bending saxophonist Matt Parker's debut album, Worlds Put Together, is a collection of mostly short pieces that crackle with originality and are imbued with an urgent and imaginative spontaneity. These are not mere sketches for expanded and more developed future compositions. They are conceptually crystalized, complete yet free-flowing and raw works that pack a visceral ...

Matt Parker: Worlds Put Together

Read "Worlds Put Together" reviewed by Mark Corroto

Saxophonist Matt Parker is an old soul. You can hear that in his music. On his debut release Worlds Put Together, he channels Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, and Dexter Gordon. It's just that this jazz geezer happens to be 33 years old.Like Lester Young, he creates music without typecasting it as “jazz." It's just ...

Scott Tixier: Brooklyn Bazaar

Read "Brooklyn Bazaar" reviewed by Raul d'Gama Rose

Violinist Scott Tixier is like a young fledgling poised to take off. This is a wondrous sight: arms (the wings) painfully outstretched, neck and, indeed, the whole body arched and on tip-toes, his bow swinging wildly as he flies off into the azure unknown. He is awkward at first; then sure that he will soar and ...

Jesse Elder: The Winding Shell

Read "The Winding Shell" reviewed by Ian Patterson

What is clear from one listen to The Winding Shell is that pianist Jesse Elder is a composer/arranger of some ambition. Changing time signatures and the harmonizing of alto and tenor are features of the music, as are interesting percussive dynamics and contrasts between softly voiced and more animated passages. Lively charge and pregnant pause coexist ...

Jesse Elder: The Winding Shell

Read "The Winding Shell" reviewed by Raul d'Gama Rose

Pianist Jesse Elder has no time for linear melodies, or logical, arithmetical rhythms. Still, on The Winding Shell, he shows himself to be a rather clever master of song form. In prismatic style, he lights up his tunes with refracted luminous and melodic excursions. He plays these around the musicians who augment his obtuse schematics, and ...

All About Jazz needs your support

Donate
All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
