John Tchicai + Ice9: No Trespassing

Heavy jazz? Free rock? Hard impro? Avantgarde Metal? In tempi di sperimentalismi e di crossover operazioni come questa non scandalizzano più nessuno. Il jazz, musica aperta allo scambio per antonomasia, cerca da tempo nuove soluzioni per rinnovarsi. E quando a un trio di giovani "metallari" con Joe Satriani nel cuore, straripante energia, si aggiungono tre sassofonisti di generazioni diverse, di cui uno padre nobile dell'Avanguardia storica, ad incuriosire è più che altro la resa artistica. La bontà dell'operazione. Soprattutto quando in gioco ci si mette un settantenne sassofonista che oggi sembra vivere una seconda giovinezza - Tchicai - e che evidentemente non ha perso la voglia di osare.

Il disco (patrocinato da Cristina Mazza e Bruno Marini) è spumeggiante, elettrizzante, con brani da mozzare il fiato. Dal primo all'ultimo si assiste ad uno spargimento di pura corrente elettrica, col rischio di rimanerci: si ascolti il brano iniziale. "Traffic Jam in the South Side," o "Modify Flower" e "Metal Dilemma," piene di funkiness, oppure "No Trespassing," tesissima e raggiante. Chiude "Blood Must Flow," in cui Tchicai aggiunge di suo una vena poetry, con un testo di Dr. John Stewart. Ruvido e adrenalinico come da copione, sugli affreschi Hard rock e i possenti riffs di chitarra si innestano i soli agili e nervosi dei tre sassofonisti. La varietà dei timbri (tenore, alto, baritono) dà al disco un tocco di colore in più.
