Roberto Magris: MatchPoint
Qui lo troviamo a capo di un quartetto comprendente il vibrafonista e percussionista cubano Alfredo Chacon, il batterista costaricano Rodolfo Zuniga e il bassista statunitense Dion Kerr. L'incontro si svolge sul condiviso terreno della melodia e del ritmo, in percorsi di festoso modern mainstream. Quattro degli otto brani sono scritti da Magris e gli altri da tre pianisti a lui cari (McCoy Tyner, Thelonious Monk, Randy Weston) e da Richard Kermode, già tastierista di Carlos Santana per cui scrisse "Yours Is the Light" qui presente.
C'è alta affinità tra l'identità latina dei partner e il pianismo danzante di Magris, aspetto esaltato dal radioso incontro pianoforte/vibrafono, spesso condotto all'unisono. Dal lavoro collettivo emerge tutta la bellezza di tradizioni musicali ampiamente condivise e rielaborate con gusto e passione: un jazz disinvolto e brillante, che si sviluppa in lunghi assoli a partire dai cantabili brani del repertorio. Tra i brani abbiamo apprezzato in modo particolare il solo piano in "Reflections" e la fresca attrattiva di "Samba for Jade," che rinnova il fascino di Cal Tjader.
