Inciso a Zurigo a fine 2015, l'album riunisce due improvvisatori di scuole e generazioni diverse: Irene Schweizer, settantasei anni, svizzera di Sciaffusa, attraversa l'avanguardia europea praticamente fin dal suo primo affermarsi (se non affacciarsi), mentre Joey Baron, sessantaduenne di Richmond, quella stessa avanguardia (ovviamente dall'altra sponda dell'Atlantico) l'ha accompagnata, per così dire fiancheggiata, nel corso di una carriera ultratrentennale abbracciando però anche esperienze "altre." La prima volta che l'abbiamo ascoltato, per dirne una, era nel trio di Jim Hall, la seconda, pochi mesi dopo, nel quintetto ornettiano di Tim Berne (fra i suoi sodali più assidui) e John Zorn (e, per inciso, picchiava come un dannato, ciò che ovviamente con Hall non avrebbe mai osato fare).

Venendo al presente lavoro, assolutamente prezioso, vi convivono diverse anime, singolarmente (ma neanche poi troppo) evocate più dalla pianista (che determina maggiormente—ancorché fisiologicamente, diremmo—i tracciati del disco) che dal batterista, partendo da un dialogo fitto, quasi forsennato, liberissimo, nell'iniziale "Free for All" (che già il titolo...), lambendo territori tayloriani (non solo qui), per poi risalire e ridiscendere più volte (fra brano e brano, ma talora anche all'interno dello stesso) il grande fiume del jazz, fino allo stride, il boogie, ovviamente il blues. Senza dimenticare Monk (per esempio in "Jungle Beat II").

Dei sette brani, quattro si devono alla pianista e tre al batterista, sempre con un impeccabile senso (e conseguente controllo) della forma, dell'impaginazione, generando come detto atmosfere composite e come tali avvincenti, con rari momenti di stanca, e comunque almeno tre brani (il già citato "Free for the All," "Jungle Beat II" e "Saturdays," i primi due della Schweizer, l'ultimo di Baron) di notevole fattura. Colpisce in particolare la nitidezza che, anche nei frangenti più irsuti, non abbandona mai i due performer. Che arrivano alla fine ancora con bello smalto. E in fondo la voglia, in chi ascolta, di andare pure avanti (il disco supera del resto di poco i quaranta minuti, applausi compresi).
