Julius Gawlik, Conference Call & Camila Nebbia

German saxophonist Julius Gawlik has captured my attention whenever I've heard him play, particularly of late with Jim Black's The Schrimps. His brilliance has taken him to the NDR Big Band at only 23 years old, and now he's released a very fine debut It's All In Your Head. More saxophone of note comes from the latest release by Conference Call, that improvisatory powerhouse led by master reedist Gebhard Ullmann and from Argentinean saxophonist Camila Nebbia who has been taking the free jazz scene by storm the last few years. Two very strong trumpet/bass/drums trios make very strong statements with their new releases, both on the Fundacja Sluchaj label out of Poland: Joe Morris,Peter Evans and Tyshawn Sorey and John Edwards, Luis Vicente & Vasco Trilla, while a pair of bassists from Portugal—André Carvalho and Rodrigo Correia—show the depth of bass players in that country. Finally, there's some Jack DeJohnette too, showing his mad versatility on releases by Miroslav Vitous, Anouar Brahem and Charles Lloyd.
