Julius Gawlik: It's All in Your Head
by Nenad Georgievski
When jazz musicians talk about composition, they often mean something closer to architecture--blueprints that guide but do not dictate. Julius Gawlik's debut album takes this idea seriously, treating written material as a starting point rather than a destination. The Berlin-based saxophonist and clarinetist has assembled a quartet that thrives on incompleteness, where sketches become conversations and ...
Aaron Parks, Artur Dutkiewicz Trio, Julius Gawlik & More
by Marek J. Śmietański
The final regular episode of the show this year (the 120th) is dedicated to November's new releases. Fewer albums dropped than usual, but that doesn't mean they were any less fascinating. Quite the opposite, in fact: I've unearthed a handful of true gems once again, including three promising debut albums that feel like discovering hidden treasure ...
Amirtha Kidambi, L.A.S. Collective, Waldron/Rivers & Pat Thomas
by Maurice Hogue
I haven't done a three-hour show for a while, but with all the new stuff coming in, it was an easy task. Several live recordings highlight this one: vocalist and provocateuse Amirtha Kidambi & Elder Ones are live in Vilnius Lithuania; the Polish L.A.S. Collective featuring trumpeter Piotr Damasiewicz are live at Café Oto in London ...
Julius Gawlik, Conference Call & Camila Nebbia
by Maurice Hogue
German saxophonist Julius Gawlik has captured my attention whenever I've heard him play, particularly of late with Jim Black's The Schrimps. His brilliance has taken him to the NDR Big Band at only 23 years old, and now he's released a very fine debut It's All In Your Head. More saxophone of note comes from the ...

Tomasz Stanko, Tomasz Dabrowski and Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre
by Maurice Hogue
Two never-heard-before albums are featured in this edition of OMJ. The first is from a saxophonist many considered overlooked for the list of great saxophonists: Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre whom Anthony Braxton considered the next great saxophonist after Coltrane. The album features Kalaparusha and quartet playing a set at Studio Rivbea in New York during the Loft ...
