Motohiko Hino: It's There

L'etichetta Enja ripropone su CD una registrazione del 1993 del batterista giapponese Motohiko Hino (fratello del più famoso Terumasa Hino) che ha due elementi distintivi importanti. Il primo è costituito dalla presenza, in qualità di sidemen, di musicisti molto noti che prestano la loro arte per la buona riuscita del progetto.

L'altro elemento distintivo è costituito dalla massiccia presenza nel repertorio di composizioni dei Led Zeppelin. Sono ben cinque i brani tratti dal book della band guidata da Jimmy Page e Robert Plant e la cosa all'epoca della registrazione di questo album era decisamente inusuale in un lavoro jazzistico.

Gli arrangiamenti sono abbastanza convenzionali e i momenti più eccitanti coincidono inevitabilmente con gli assoli dei due chitarristi, che si alternano nei vari brani, tenendo solo "The Rain Song" come terreno comune. In questo brano Stern e Scofield rinverdiscono i dialoghi che già avevano messo in atto dieci anni prima, quando entrambi erano alla corte di Re Miles Davis. Il loro fraseggio è decisamente ancorato al jazz-rock e dimostrano di essere ancora lontani dalle contaminazioni più profonde che, specie nel caso di Scofield, li hanno visti protagonisti in epoca più recente.

Forse il musicista più a suo agio in questo contesto è proprio il bassista Steve Swallow che sembra trovare un filo logico per procedere con la giusta sensibilità in ogni contesto ritmico, sostenendo a dovere la scansione precisa della batteria di Motohiko Hino. Karen Mantler se ne sta un po' nell'ombra, ma il suo organo poco intrusivo ha un ruolo importante nell'economia dei brani e diventa spesso il giusto propellente per innescare le escursioni solistiche dei compagni di viaggio.

Il sax di Dave Liebman è presente in 3 brani e fornisce una voce aggiuntiva importante fin dalla fase tematica, aggiungendo un prezioso elemento alla tavolozza timbrica del gruppo. Lo troviamo particolarmente in forma nella title-track, con un assolo al sax soprano che sa zigzagare a dovere, ben incalzato dalla chitarra di Scofield. Decisamente meno riuscito sembra il brano "Dazed and Confused," reso con un arrangiamento un po' rigido che non sa mettere a profitto il sagace minimalismo del celebre riff. La tromba di Terumasa Hino è presente solo nel cavallo di battaglia degli Zeppelin, quella "Stairway To Heaven" che ha rubato l'anima a milioni di fan del gruppo inglese. Questa versione risulta essere un po' macchinosa e si conferma la difficoltà per il jazz-rock dell'epoca di approcciare un repertorio intrinsecamente rock.
