In principio fu l'Esbjörn Svenson Trio. Correva l'anno 1993, quando venne pubblicato il loro primo album When Everyone Has Gone. Nel giro di pochi anni divennero famosi in tutto il mondo. I meno lungimiranti (e purtroppo mi devo includere tra questi) pensarono che quel mix di jazz di facile accessibilità, rock e classica, che aveva dato successo all'E.S.T., sarebbe stato un fenomeno passeggero e di breve durata. Troppo complesso per piacere al grande pubblico, troppo "leggero" per soddisfare i palati più esigenti.

Oggi, a vent'anni di distanza (ah, quanto è più facile prevedere il passato che il futuro!) il mondo pullula di epigoni dell'E.S.T., posizionati lungo tutte le varie possibili sfumature di quell'universo sonoro delineato a suo tempo dal trio svedese. Tra tali epigoni, un posto d'onore spetta sicuramente al Tingvall Trio dello svedese (ma musicalmente cresciuto nella scena jazzistica di Amburgo) Martin Tingvall. Attivo dal 2003, vincitore di due Jazz Echo Awards (una sorta di Grammy tedesco), il trio combina con indubbia capacità echi jazz e classici con strutture di derivazione pop creando brani di immediata fruizione e di altrettanto immediata cantabilità.

Dopo quattro album in studio (tra i quali Vattensaga, Vägen e En ny dag), il trio propone ora una registrazione dal vivo in cui vengono ripercorse le tappe principali di quei lavori discografici. Non ci sono dunque composizioni inedite, ma grazie alla dimensione live i brani acquisiscono nuova linfa. Più grintosi, più spontanei, più jazz. Aggiungete al tutto un suono curatissimo (c'è lo zampino di Stefano Amerio, e si sente!), e ne ricaverete un album - per gli amanti del genere - imperdibile.
