Un libro imperdibile che informa, illumina ed irretisce sia l'esperto jazzofilo che il neofita. È l'ultimo capitolo della più autorevole storia del jazz in commercio, magistralmente curata da Marcello Piras nell'edizione italiana.

Un classico della letteratura jazzistica, che seguendo le orme dei volumi precedenti racconta con arguzia storie, stili e linguaggi del jazz fino al 1946. In primo piano partiture e dischi, cenni biografici ed analisi musicologia, per raccontare le vicende delle grandi orchestre bianche degli anni '30. Come è noto, Schuller le considera derivative nei confronti dello swing degli afroamericani.

È una tesi sviscerata a fondo con minuziosa analisi, che partendo dal successo commerciale di Casa Loma, arriva a circumnavigare le personalità artistiche di Paul Whiteman, Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, Woddy Herman, Tommy Dorsey.

Ma la classe cristallina dell'autore rifulge soprattutto nella parte dedicata alle band regionali, proiettando così una luce nuova e diversa su musicisti oscuri ma fulgidi, che per varie ragioni preferirono operare nella città di residenza. È il caso di Buster Smith, Ashford Hardee, Nat Bates, Peck Kelley solo per fare qualche nome.

Emerge un quadro affascinante, che dal Texas a Kansas City avrà un ruolo fondamentale per la crescita di innovatori del calibro di Lester Young, Jimmy Blanton, Charlie Parker, Charlie Cristian e moti altri ancora.

L'ultima parte del saggio è dedicato alle doti pianistiche di Nat King Cole e le gemme discografiche di Rex Stewart, per poi chiudere con il genio tristaniano. Ad impreziosire l'opera, una aggiornata selezione discografica del curatore Marcello Piras.
